What is an MX record?

An MX (mail exchange) record is a DNS record that tells sending mail servers which hosts accept email for a domain. Each record has a priority value, and senders try the lowest number first.

What does it mean if a domain has no MX records?

Sending servers can fall back to the domain's A record in rare configurations, but in practice a domain without MX records will not receive email reliably. Messages sent to addresses at that domain will usually bounce, so treat those addresses as undeliverable.

Why do domains have multiple MX records?

Multiple records provide redundancy. Senders deliver to the record with the lowest priority value, and if that server is unreachable they move to the next one. Large providers like Google Workspace publish four or five MX hosts for this reason.

How does provider detection work?

The tool matches the MX hostnames against known provider patterns. For example, aspmx.l.google.com means Google Workspace and mail.protection.outlook.com means Microsoft 365. It also recognizes Zoho, Proofpoint, Mimecast, Cloudflare Email Routing, and Yandex.

Can I check whether specific mailboxes exist?
